Upgrading Your Backup Power Generator

Almost every winter we see storms taking down lines and knocking out power across British Columbia. Sometimes these storms are so big it can take days for power to be restored to everyone. That’s why it is important to have a backup power generator in the event of an emergency, such as a big storm hitting without much warning. It is even more important, however, to ensure that your backup generator is in working order well before the time comes that you may need to use it. At Empower Electric, we can help you determine if it’s time for a generator upgrade and, if it is, we can help take care of that, too. Keep reading to find out how to tell if your backup power generator needs upgrading.

How to Know When It’s Time for an Upgrade

To prevent yourself from being left in the dark the next time a storm strikes, it is important to keep your backup power generator in good working condition. If used frequently, you’ll want your generator serviced every year, otherwise after every 200 hours of use. A rarely used generator can last between 20 and 30 years if it is of good quality. Each unit will typically have a specific number of usage hours you can expect from it–about 2,000 to 30,000 hours depending on the model and category. Many, if not all, generators have a counter on them to track the usage hours.

You’ll also want to keep an eye out for signs of wear and tear, such as having to replace the same part too often or making too many repairs. You may also notice an increase in fuel consumption as generators are powered by liquid propane, diesel, or natural gas. As they start to wear out, they use more and more fuel from decreased efficiency. The backup power generator also won’t be able to handle the same load as it did when it was newer and will provide you with less power overall.
